Beach Haven Hospital’s Tui Unit is a 32 bed specialist hospital unit in Beach Haven, on the North Shore of Auckland.  It is a unit for residents who require psychogeriatric level of care.

Tui Unit often takes residents from other facilities that are unable to manage because of  their extreme dementia and associated behaviours that are challenging to manage.

Value: Everyone MattersTui Unit wanted to enhance its pre-existing Person Centred Care Programme and to encourage families to feel involved and welcome, enabling and maintaining close contact with their loved ones.  The unit staff wanted to take away the clinical ‘feel’ of the unit because it is important for families to know they are bringing their loved one to a home, not an institution.

The unit created a poster to demonstrate the innovative and interesting ways the person centred care initiatives were implemented by the unit’s staff.  The poster illustrates the compassion of the Beach Haven Hospital staff and the evolution of aged care, especially that of residents afflicted with severe dementia, reversing the focus away from medical problems and the clinical roles of staff and putting the resident’s needs right at the top.

The poster shows their improvements and results as "Nutritional Facts" in keeping with the recipe theme.  [Download a copy of the Melting Moments poster]
